Abstract

Abstract The Canteen as a communal space in the campus environment has an important role in supporting social activities and basic needs of students. However, high usage intensity and limited space during peak hours often lead to layout inefficiencies, user inconvenience, and a lack of flexibility in accommodating variations in the number and interaction patterns of visitors. This study aims to design the development of adaptive configurations of regular dining tables and chairs in the campus canteen area, with a case study of the Central Canteen of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS). The methodology used includes field studies on existing conditions, observation of user behavior, interviews, and analysis of space needs based on ergonomic principles and modular configuration concepts. The adaptive concept is realized through a furniture system that can be flexibly adjusted to the number of users, types of activities, and movement patterns in the dining room. The design is focused on spatial efficiency, convenience of social interaction, and ease of operational management by canteen managers. The final result of this study is expected to be in the form of a prototype of a regular desk and chair design with a configuration system that can increase the effectiveness of space use, user comfort, and adaptability to the dynamic needs of the campus environment. This design can also be an implementive model for the development of canteen furniture in other higher education institutions.
