Abstract

Pollution loads in the Brantas River Basin (DAS) are increasing significantly and are expected to become much higher in the future. On the other hand, water utilization in the Basin requires water resources of good quality, which should increase every year to meet the required standards. Under these circumstances, water quality management planning and reliable periodic monitoring activities require representative sampling locations that can describe the actual condition of water quality.
The number of sampling points in the Brantas River that has been established by Perum Jasa Tirta I is approximately 15 points. In this study, the researcher established 6 sampling points in the middle and lower reaches of the Brantas River to be evaluated based on industrial wastewater discharge into the river and the influence of inflows from tributaries in those reaches.
This research is conducted using the HP2S model, which is based on the laws of energy and mass conservation. The model is able to identify the two-dimensional (2-D) horizontal direction of pollutant dispersion in the river at various flow velocities. The HP2S model uses the leap-frog explicit finite-difference numerical method, visualized using the MATLAB computer program. The model uses secondary data on the COD parameter during the dry season provided by Perum Jasa Tirta I. Primary data are used for coefficient calibration. Flow conditions in the middle and lower reaches of the Brantas River during the dry season are predominantly laminar, with velocities ranging from 0.05 m/s to 0.9 m/s. The direction of river flow varies from meandering to straight. The water quality conditions in these reaches still meet the required standards.
Based on the results of the HP2S model, of the 6 sampling points evaluated, 3 sampling points are considered representative. On the other hand, the locations of the other sampling points need to be reviewed and adjusted to ensure that they are appropriately positioned according to the direction of pollutant dispersion in the river.
