Abstract

Pada Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR), terdapat query dari kata dalam suatu bahasa yang digunakan untuk mencari dokumen yang menggunakan bahasa yang berbeda. Salah satu metode yang digunakan untuk mentranslasikan query tersebut adalah pivot-based translation atau transitive translation. Dengan transitive translation, sebuah topik pencarian dapat ditranslasikan ke bahasa yang digunakan pada koleksi dokumen yang dicari melalui sebuah bahasa pivot (intermediate). Pada tesis ini, dilakukan translasi dari Bahasa Jawa ke Bahasa Inggris melalui Bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa pivot-nya. Metode translasi yang digunakan adalah word-by-word translation dengan bantuan Machine Readable Dictionary (MRD). Dalam proses translasinya, MRD menggunakan teknik translasi Everymatch Method (EM). Suatu kata mungkin memiliki lebih dari satu arti; dengan metode EM, semua kemungkinan hasil translasi akan ditampilkan, sehingga proses translasi dengan menggunakan MRD akan menghasilkan tingkat ambiguity (ambiguitas) yang tinggi, yang pada transitive translation dapat berakibat pada akurasi yang rendah. Untuk mengurangi ambiguitas pada query translation tersebut, digunakan Two-Phase Method (TP) pada masing-masing translasi. Dengan metode TP, translasi dilakukan dua arah dengan menggunakan metode EM. Hasil translasi yang digunakan adalah semua kata yang menghasilkan kata yang sama saat ditranslasikan kembali ke bahasa asal. Proses ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan akurasi hasil translasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan metode TP dapat meningkatkan akurasi hasil translasi jika dibandingkan dengan penggunaan metode EM. Hal ini didasarkan pada hasil uji coba proses transitive translation dari Bahasa Jawa ke Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan Bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa pivot-nya, yang menunjukkan bahwa tingkat akurasi hasil translasi dengan menggunakan metode EM adalah sebesar 73%, sedangkan dengan menggunakan metode TP adalah sebesar 82%.

Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) involves a query of words in one language used to find documents written in a different language. One of the methods used to translate such queries is pivot-based translation or transitive translation. Through transitive translation, a search topic can be translated into the language of the searched document collection via an intermediate pivot language. In this thesis, translation from Javanese into English is conducted using Indonesian as the pivot language. The translation method applied is word-by-word translation using a Machine Readable Dictionary (MRD). During the translation process, the MRD employs the Everymatch Method (EM) translation technique. Since a word may have more than one meaning, the EM method displays all possible translation results. Consequently, the translation process using the MRD results in high ambiguity, which in the case of transitive translation can lead to low accuracy. To reduce ambiguity in query translation, a Two-Phase Method (TP) is applied in each translation phase. With the TP method, translation is conducted in two directions using the EM method, and the retained translation results consist of all words that yield the same terms when translated back to the source language. This process is expected to increase translation accuracy. The results of this research indicate that the use of the TP method can improve translation accuracy compared to the EM method. This is supported by empirical tests of the transitive translation process from Javanese into English using Indonesian as the pivot language, which demonstrate that the accuracy of the translation result using the EM method is approximately 73%, while that of the TP method reaches 82%.
