Abstract

The problems of domestic and industrial wastewater have not been completely solved in both municipal and rural areas of Indonesia. Much domestic and industrial wastewater contains biodegradable organic matter (BOM) that is rich in nitrogen (N) in several forms, such as nitrate (NO₃⁻). Excessive nitrate (NO₃⁻) needs to be controlled at a concentration level that does not have negative effects on human health through the denitrification process.
Compost used as a carbon source was obtained from two different sources in this denitrification research. Variations of sterilized compost without denitrifying microbes and non-sterilized compost with denitrifying microbes were used to determine the optimum C:N ratio, input nitrate concentration, and operational flow rate for the denitrification process. The C:N ratios of the compost were varied at 10:1, 15:1, and 20:1. The input nitrate concentrations were adjusted to approximately 100 mg/L, 200 mg/L, and 300 mg/L. Meanwhile, the reactor operating flow rates were set at 0.02 L/hour, 0.04 L/hour, and 0.08 L/hour.
The results of this research yielded an optimum compost C:N ratio of 20:1, with an operational flow rate of 0.02–0.08 L/hour and an input nitrate concentration of 100–300 mg/L.
