Abstract

Humic water in West Kalimantan is characterized by a dark brown to blackish color (124–850 Pt.Co), a high organic compound content (138–1,560 mg/L KMnO₄), and an acidic condition (pH 3.7–5.3). These conditions indicate that humic water still requires special treatment before it can be used as a source of water for domestic purposes. One alternative treatment for reducing organic content and color in water is the combination of an Upflow Anaerobic Filter and a Slow Sand Filter (SSF).
The objective of this research is to study the potential use of a combination of an Upflow Anaerobic Filter and a Slow Sand Filter to treat organic matter, color, turbidity, Fe, and Mn in humic water. This research was conducted using humic water taken from West Kalimantan Province. The reactors used were a series of UAF and SSF reactors. The research variables included variations in environmental pH (pH 5–9) to determine the optimum pH for the growth of anaerobic bacteria, variations in the filter media of the UAF anaerobic reactor (i.e., gravel, PVC, and used Yakult bottles), and variations in the filtration rate of the SSF (0.15, 0.3, and 0.45 m³/m²·hour).
The results of this study indicated that the optimum pH for the growth of anaerobic bacteria isolated from local humic water (Clostridium sp. and Bacillus sp.) was pH 7–8. The anaerobic process in the UAF reactor played a major role in reducing organic matter and color, while the SSF process played a greater role in reducing Fe and Mn. The combination of a gravel-media UAF with an SSF at a filtration rate of 0.15 m³/m²·hour produced the best results, with effluent concentrations of organic substances (PV) of 43.2 mg/L, color of 11 Pt.Co, turbidity of 13 NTU, Fe of 0.5 mg/L, and Mn of 0.5 mg/L. These data indicate that the Fe parameter met the requirements for clean water as stipulated in Permenkes No. 416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990, while the other four parameters did not yet meet the requirements.
