Abstract

Human urine contributes at least 1% of domestic wastewater, with a relatively high nutrient content, consisting of 80% nitrogen and 50% phosphate (Larsen et al., 2001). On the other hand, increasing food demand leads to an increased need for nutrient supplies, particularly for rice plants (Oryza sativa L.). The ecological sanitation system offers a solution for both pollution control and nutrient supply through the principle of recycling, in which the high concentration of nitrogen and other chemical elements in urine can be processed flexibly. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to determine the potential and effects of variations in urine application and dosage on rice plant growth. The results of this research show that hygienization of urine through storage for 0 days, 30 days, and 6 months increased the pH and nitrogen content due to urea hydrolysis as the storage period increased. Meanwhile, stabilization through acidification before 30 days of storage inhibited the rate of ammonium formation and the increase in pH during the storage process. The higher the inorganic nitrogen content in the applied urine, the better the growth of the rice plants. Variations in urine application also affected the increase in rice plant height, particularly at a volume of 3000 ml.
