Abstract

Biodegradable organic wastewater is usually treated using either a suspended growth or an attached growth system. Each system has its own advantages and disadvantages. The two systems can be combined to integrate the advantages of both, resulting in a hybrid reactor. A laboratory-scale reactor study was conducted to examine the reactor performance under different recirculation ratios and COD feed concentrations.
Four reactors were constructed and operated in parallel with recirculation ratios of 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75%. Synthetic wastewater with COD feed concentrations of 200 mg/L, 400 mg/L, and 600 mg/L was used as the influent.
The reactor performance was affected by both the recirculation ratio and COD feed concentration. A higher recirculation ratio resulted in greater COD and ammonia removal. On the other hand, removal efficiency decreased as the COD feed concentration increased. Based on soluble COD and BOD concentrations, at a hydraulic retention time of two hours, COD, BOD, and ammonia removal efficiencies were 60–78%, 80–90%, and 30–55%, respectively. Although ammonia removal occurred, nitrification was not identified.
