Abstract

T-welded fillets are widely used in the shipbuilding industry, bridge structures, and other industries. In the GMAW welding process, there are various welding sequences and tack weld variations, all of which are applied to reduce the main problems in the welding process, namely deformation, residual stress, and weld cracking. The T-type fillet welding process was carried out using low-carbon steel ASTM A36 (general construction steel) specimens with a fillet length, flange width, and web height of 200 × 200 × 100 mm, a web thickness of 12 mm, and a flange thickness of 12 mm. The welding sequences used were straight, symmetrical, and zig-zag sequences. This study focused on analyzing hardness distribution, HAZ width, and microstructure. The experimental results showed that the effects of tack weld on the welding sequence and the effects of the welding sequence on the tack weld produced similar results. The hardness distribution showed that the highest hardness occurred in Workpiece Model 1, with a symmetrical tack weld of approximately 90 HRB in the HAZ, while the zig-zag tack weld produced the highest hardness in Model 5, at 85.16 HRB in the HAZ. The HAZ width analysis showed that the largest HAZ width was 2.7 mm in the flange area and 1.25 mm in the flange area. The microstructural analysis showed that the structures formed in the HAZ after welding were coarse pearlite and a small amount of ferrite. Meanwhile, distortion occurred evenly on both flange sections, resulting in an average angular deformation of 2–2.5 degrees.
