Abstract

Sebagai bentuk kesadaran akan modernitas, Arsitektur Modern dicirikan oleh tiga hal, yaitu subjektivitas, sikap kritis, dan kemajuan. “Form Follows Function” (FFF) merupakan salah satu semboyan Arsitektur Modern yang dikenal luas dan memengaruhi sebagian besar arsitek di seluruh dunia pada abad ke-XX. Seiring dengan berkembangnya semangat modernitas, terjadi pergeseran dan pemaknaan kembali terhadap semboyan tersebut. Di sisi lain, Arsitektur Modern Indonesia dikenal dan dipahami sebagai penerapan teori dan konsep Arsitektur Modern yang berkembang di Eropa dan Amerika. Dalam kenyataannya, penerapan tersebut diduga juga mengalami pergeseran dan penyesuaian terhadap semboyan FFF. Kondisi tersebut menunjukkan bahwa makna FFF berkembang dan mengalami pergeseran seiring dengan perkembangan zaman. Penelitian ini merupakan upaya untuk memahami pergeseran makna semboyan FFF di Indonesia serta penerapannya oleh arsitek “asli” Indonesia pada sekitar tahun 1970-an melalui kajian kritik arsitektur. Pengertian FFF sebagaimana dimaksud oleh pencetusnya, Louis Henry Sullivan, dirumuskan terlebih dahulu dengan menggunakan tulisan Jordy (1978) sebagai sumber dasar dalam merumuskan pengertian tersebut. Sejalan dengan semangat modernitas, butir-butir pemikiran FFF ditempatkan dalam perspektif teori Strukturalisme berdasarkan kategori perkembangan teori arsitektur kontemporer menurut Kate Nesbitt (1996). Butir-butir pemikiran dalam FFF selanjutnya digunakan untuk mengkaji tiga karya Ir. Harjono Sigit BS. Bukti empiris mengenai fenomena pergeseran dan penyesuaian terhadap teori FFF di Indonesia pada sekitar tahun 1970-an menunjukkan adanya perubahan yang nyata dan dapat diapresiasi. Dengan demikian, potensi pemaknaan FFF dapat ditempatkan secara lebih jelas, tepat, dan akademis dalam memahami manfaat serta perannya terhadap perkembangan teori arsitektur pada masa tersebut maupun dalam konteks perkembangan arsitektur Indonesia di masa mendatang.

As a manifestation of modern consciousness, Modern Architecture is characterized by three aspects: subjectivity, critical thinking, and progress. “Form Follows Function” (FFF) is one of the well-known principles of Modern Architecture that influenced a significant number of architects throughout the world during the twentieth century. Along with the development of modern consciousness, the interpretation and application of this principle underwent various shifts and transformations. Indonesian Modern Architecture, on the other hand, has generally been understood as an application of modern architectural theories and concepts developed in Europe and America. In practice, however, these theories and concepts have also undergone reinterpretation and adaptation, including in relation to the principle of FFF. This condition demonstrates that the meaning of FFF has developed and shifted in accordance with changes over time. This study seeks to examine the changing interpretation of FFF in Indonesia and its application by Indonesian architects during the 1970s through an architectural criticism approach. The original meaning of FFF as formulated by its initiator, Louis Henry Sullivan, is first established, with Jordy’s (1978) work serving as the primary basis for formulating its meaning. In accordance with the spirit of modernity, the fundamental ideas of FFF are examined from the perspective of Structuralism, based on Kate Nesbitt’s (1996) categorization of contemporary architectural theory. These ideas are subsequently used to examine three architectural works by Ir. Harjono Sigit BS. The empirical evidence demonstrates clear and significant shifts and adaptations in the interpretation and application of FFF in Indonesia during the 1970s. Thus, the potential meaning of FFF can be positioned more clearly, accurately, and academically in understanding its significance and role in the development of architectural theory at that time and in the future development of architecture in Indonesia.
