Abstract

The Ijen area in Malang City was designed during the Dutch colonial era as an integrated development consisting of a sports park (sportparkbedrijf) and housing with an Indische architectural character. The area has been designated as a heritage area and serves as one of the main historical tourism attractions in the city. In its development, the Ijen area has undergone various physical and functional changes without referring to the identity of the area. The problem addressed in this research is how to formulate a conservation strategy to maintain the identity of the Ijen area in Malang City as a heritage area. The objectives are to identify the identity of buildings and their environment, identify the level of identity changes, and determine conservation strategies according to the level of identity changes within the study area. The research area covers the corridors of Ijen Besar Street, Semeru Street, Aljuno Street, and Kawi Street, with the discussion focused on the Kawi Street corridor, considering that this corridor has experienced various forms of physical development. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method divided into three phases. The first phase was identity identification, which applied the theories of urban architectural identity, local area formation, and typology. The analysis in this phase used the highest proportion of identity characteristics. The second phase was the identification of the level of identity change, based on the theories of conservation principles, visual linkage systems in urban architecture, and Gestalt perception. A weighting matrix was used for the analysis in this phase. The final phase involved determining the conservation strategy using heritage conservation theory and analyzing the extent to which the criteria for conservation strategies were fulfilled. The results show that the Kawi Street corridor has experienced identity changes at small, medium, and large scales. One conservation strategy or a combination of two conservation strategies is required according to the level of identity change of the heritage objects. A strategy intensity of 33% or less does not have a significant effect on heritage conservation efforts. The Gestalt perception approach plays a role in supporting adaptation strategies as an effort to maintain the physical unity of the heritage area.
