Abstract

Grid Datafarm architecture is designed to facilitate reliable file sharing, as well as distributed and parallel data computing with high performance in a cross-domain Grid environment by providing a global virtual file system. Gfarm v2 is a software tool for implementing a global virtual file system that fully supports the POSIX API standard. This Final Project discusses the design and implementation of Gfarm v2 in the Elektro Grid ITS environment.
The test results show scalable disk I/O and network bandwidth on five nodes of the Gfarm cluster by copying several files and using benchmark tools such as IOzone and thput-fsys. Parallel Gfarm I/O write and read operations achieve data transfer rates of 37 MB/s and 2.5 GB/s, respectively. As the number of nodes increases, the I/O performance of the Gfarm file system and the resulting virtual storage capacity also increase due to file affinity scheduling.
The main issue encountered during the implementation of Gfarm was the installation process, which differed slightly because the available documentation generally describes implementation on Linux operating systems based on Red Hat distributions, whereas the Elektro Grid uses Debian. Another issue was the use of public IP addresses for each node. However, since the implementation is still within the ee.its.ac.id domain, private IP addresses can still be used because each node can still communicate with and be identified by the other nodes.
