Abstract

One of the ways in which architectural works communicate is through expression. Through its expression, an architectural work can communicate with its audience. The success of this communication is greatly influenced by the extent to which the expression can be perceived and understood by the audience. Expression refers to the manifestation of certain qualities and values of an object. Such expression can be perceived by the audience through visual observation of the architectural work. This study compares the architectural expression of the Yogyakarta Kraton as examined through the principles of architectural composition proposed by Ching (1996) with the architectural instruments proposed by Rasmussen (1962). The principles of architectural composition proposed by Ching (1996) include proportion, rhythm, hierarchy, datum, shape, and color. Meanwhile, the architectural instruments proposed by Rasmussen (1962) include proportion, rhythm in architecture, surface character, and color in architecture. The study of expression using Ching’s (1996) principles is more oriented toward the geometrical treatment of the object, whereas Rasmussen’s (1962) instruments are more oriented toward the treatment of the object’s visual character. The object of the study is the Yogyakarta Kraton complex. In this study, the scope is limited to the principal buildings within the Yogyakarta Kraton complex, namely Tratag Pagelaran, Tratag Sitihinggil, Bangsal Ponconiti, Gedong Purwaretna, Gedong Jene, and Bangsal Kencana. The objects were examined through visual observation documented using photography. Graphic analysis was conducted to identify the architectural expression of the objects in terms of proportion, rhythm in architecture, hierarchy, and datum. Photographic analysis was used to examine the expression of the objects in terms of shape, surface character, and color in architecture. By comparing the architectural expression of the Yogyakarta Kraton as examined according to Ching (1996) and Rasmussen (1962), the distinctive characteristics of Yogyakarta Kraton architecture can be identified from each analytical approach. In addition, the similarities and differences between the two approaches can also be identified.
