Abstract

The exploration of Nusantara architecture conducted thus far has not yet comprehensively and extensively addressed the full richness and diversity of existing architectural forms. The wisdom and understanding of Nusantara architecture have also not been sufficiently brought to light. This thesis is an attempt to obtain a clearer and more precise understanding of the formation of Nusantara architecture. The practice of borrowing knowledge through perspectives commonly employed by scholars is ultimately unavoidable if we seek to explore and contribute to the understanding of Nusantara architecture. Knowledge derived from Western perspectives may produce bias and inconsistencies if it is not examined critically. One approach to obtaining such knowledge is to employ Vitruvius’ view concerning the emergence of the first architecture through the human use of fire. The limitations of Vitruvius’ view are clarified and expanded in this thesis through Norman Crowe’s interpretation. Crowe employs a different perspective, namely the evolutionary paradigm. According to Crowe, architectural evolution may occur through the processes of imitation, invention, and innovation. Vitruvius’ theory concerning fire is further explored through Crowe’s paradigm by examining the case of Tengger architecture. The Tengger community demonstrates the importance of fire in their daily lives and the significance of this element in the presence and formation of architecture. Fire placed in the pawon is used by the Tengger people for cooking and warming themselves. Furthermore, the presence of the pawon within a domestic space also serves as a place for receiving guests. The exploration of the past through traces found in Tengger architecture is used to critically examine Vitruvius’ notion of the first architecture and Crowe’s paradigm of architectural evolution. This critical examination employs descriptive, interpretive, and normative methods of criticism. The relationship between fire and architecture, which was previously regarded as a belief and worldview, is examined in this thesis in an attempt to clarify its possible validity and to provide a broader understanding of the role and influence of fire on architecture. The application of Crowe’s interpretation in this thesis is expected to provide a deeper explanation and reinforce the validity of Vitruvius’ view. The differences in perspective employed by Vitruvius and Crowe are also expected to expand and enrich the body of knowledge concerning the relationship between fire and architecture. Through a critical examination of Tengger architecture in relation to Vitruvius’ view and Crowe’s paradigm, this thesis ultimately explains the relationship between fire and architecture in the Tengger context. The thesis demonstrates the potential of fire to create spaces or zones within Tengger architecture. The progress and development of increasingly efficient uses of fire also indicate a relationship with the development of increasingly complex spatial configurations in Tengger architecture. Ultimately, the critical adoption of a Western perspective in this thesis contributes to an understanding of fire and Tengger architecture while simultaneously revealing the strengths and limitations of the adopted perspective.
