Abstract

The traditional house of Bugis can be considered an expression of the ancient culture of the Bugis people. It has been continually inherited from generation to generation. In the concept of building a house, the Bugis people believe that nature (macrocosmic) consists of three layers, i.e., upper-earth (Boting Langi), central-earth (Ale Kawa), and lower-earth (Uri Liyu). Based on this belief, the traditional Bugis house can be divided into three parts, which are expressed in the form of a house on stilts (rumah panggung). The three parts are the cellar, the space under the house (Awa Bola), the body of the house (Ale Bola), and the roof (Rakkeang). Such a form is intended to protect the occupants from animals or natural disasters.
On a functional basis, the traditional house of Bugis has a social function, not only as a residence but also for family development and as a place for the occupants to adapt and actualize themselves with the environment.
Within its development, without being consciously planned, the Bugis house has the potential to develop. Such potential includes the space under the house (kolong rumah), which can also serve as a multipurpose facility that is useful for supporting the lives of the occupants. The construction system of the house does not function only as a support for the house but can also be used to support the lives of the residents. The flexible concept of the spatial arrangement of the house functions as a regulator so that all activities can be accommodated without any conflict.
With such potentials, the traditional Bugis house is able to accommodate all industrial activities of woven silk without disturbing the main function of the house, i.e., as a place of residence. This shows that the house can be considered a productive house.
The ability of the traditional Bugis house to act as a productive house shows the development of the meaning and function of the house. The development of the house cannot only be seen merely as a dwelling place but also as having other functions, namely economic and social functions. This development proves that the traditional Bugis house is not static but dynamically developing.
Within its development, the traditional Bugis house that accommodates HBE (home-based enterprises) undergoes some changes, but these changes do not alter the form or shape and spatial arrangement of the house. HBE has played an important role as a filter to protect the house from influences that can cause the loss of the identity of the traditional Bugis house. Even though there is a conflict of interest between the desire to alter the form of the house and the need to maintain the existence of HBE for woven silk, the traditional home industry of woven silk dominantly influences the owners of the house to maintain the traditional form (shape) of the house. The reason for this is that the lifestyle of the occupants still depends on the development of the HBE of woven silk, while the need to develop the industry depends greatly on the form and spatial arrangement of the house. As a result, the form and spatial arrangement of the traditional Bugis house tend to be maintained in their original condition.
A different situation occurs in traditional Bugis houses that do not function as places for the woven silk industry. The identity of the house could easily be changed because there is no filter against external influences. These influences could easily be absorbed by the occupants or owners to change the standard form and spatial arrangement according to the owners' preferences.
Based on the above situations, it can be concluded that the traditional identity of the Bugis house could exist more strongly in houses that run a home industry of woven silk than in those that do not. The presence of the home industry can even enrich the meaning and function of the house. The industry can function as a filter to protect the traditional identity of the house from the influences of changes in the owner's lifestyle. The industry can strengthen the existence of the traditional Bugis house.
