Abstract

The philosophy of Derrida's Deconstruction offers comprehension and a new perspective on architecture, so that the process of rethinking the premises and principles of architectural tradition can be carried out. Architecture as an achievement can be considered a group of signs and a text that communicates values and meanings behind its physical appearance. Therefore, there is an opportunity to interpret it through the strategy and method of Derrida's Deconstruction. Although there are relatively few studies on the architectural aspects of settlements, Derrida has offered the same pattern of thinking for the aspects of dwelling and housing.
Gresik, as the first harbor city in East Java (moved from Leran to Gresik), had an important role in the international trade route along the southern route: the Malacca Strait–Java Sea–Maluku. Besides serving as a world trade route, it also coincided with the development and spread of Islam.
Syech Maulana Malik Ibrahim, a holy man who spread Islam in Java (landed in Leran Village in the 13th century), was respected by the authorities during the Majapahit era and was appointed as the first harbor master in Gresik. He was given land in Gapuro Village (near the Gresik harbor), which is now known as the boundary area of Gapurosukolilo Village and is located in the town center of Gresik (the old town of Gresik). Today, the area is one of the old kampungs in Gresik and is called the Malik Ibrahim Arab Kampung. Most of the population are descendants of Yemeni Arabs. When viewed from the appearance, spatial patterns, and housing functions in this kampung, there have been specific and conspicuous changes (contrast/deconstruction) from past to present conditions. These changes are caused by changes in the behavioral patterns and occupations of the Arab Kampung inhabitants, or by other factors.
Connected with the above cases, how have the changes in housing in Kampung Arab Malik Ibrahim Gresik occurred from the perspective of deconstruction? Therefore, the research methods used are descriptive and historical research methods, in order to investigate the phenomena that are currently occurring intensively. The analysis is conducted qualitatively and quantitatively, by taking cases in the area of RW II, Kampung Arab Malik Ibrahim, Desa Gapurosukolilo, Kecamatan Gresik, Kabupaten Gresik.
The results of the research explained that, through the perspective of deconstruction, the Arab Kampung housing in Gresik has undergone changes in the appearance of the housing, from a closed to an open impression, and in the housing pattern, from a specific to a non-specific pattern.
