Abstract

The train transportation service is one of the modes of transportation that has a high frequency, as evidenced by the crowded train tracks or trajectories. Therefore, to support safety factors in controlling trains, the condition of the locomotive engineer and the train must be suitable. To support the above conditions, PT. KAI DAOP VIII Surabaya provides training and safety/standard operating procedures for work. Although locomotive engineers are still considered a main factor in accidents (PLH), various studies have shown that many significant factors contribute to human error, one of which is increased mental workload.
This research began with the identification of significant factors that are considered to influence the mental workload of locomotive engineers when operating trains (type of train, length of work experience, education, and age). Based on these factors, driving scenarios were arranged according to the selected critical driving phases and conditions (switch-crash phase, driving at high speed, and passing through crossings). Meanwhile, the selected driving conditions were normal conditions and abnormal conditions, such as damage to the engine, brake failure, damage to the locomotive's electrical/sintelis components, and damage to the railway tracks.
After the scenarios were completed, the SWAT method was applied to measure the mental workload of locomotive engineers. Furthermore, by using a factorial experimental design, the patterns of factors that most significantly affect the workload of locomotive engineers were identified. The pattern of factor effects with the highest average workload was then determined. After identifying this pattern, the HEART method was used to analyze human error and measure the possibility of errors occurring. The final results of the research provide an illustration of the pattern of factors that produces the highest workload for each type of train and occurs during the phases that were simulated while the train was being operated by the locomotive engineer.
