Abstract

The quality of fingerprint images is a crucial factor in determining accurate fingerprint recognition results in a biometric system, as accurate minutiae extraction depends heavily on fingerprint image quality. Dry fingerprint images are typically of poor quality, where ridges appear locally scratchy and contain many unwanted white pixels. To improve system performance and image quality, extensive research has been conducted on image enhancement algorithms. Applying preprocessing specifically to dry fingerprint images during the enhancement stage yields more robust quality improvements. The proposed preprocessing method enhances image quality appropriately by applying several sequential steps: smoothing, skeletonization, dilation, and the union of black pixels between the original and dilated images. Experimental results indicate that this preprocessing method improves the quality of dry fingerprint images fourfold compared to the original images.
