Abstract

The learning method is a significant point exerting an influence on learning output parameters. Game activities stimulate human cognitive abilities to efficiently utilize emotional, social, and physical aspects. Educative games are a form of teaching activity that can be conducted using various educational techniques or devices. Along with technological development, learners exploiting mobile communication and internet technologies have generated a new wave leading to mobile learning. Mobile learning refers to a learning model using mobile devices and wireless technology unrestricted by time and space. Mobile Game-Based Learning (mGBL) offers an attractive and entertaining learning model with a single-loop learning method utilizing mobile devices. A Finite State Machine (FSM) hierarchy is a design method using states and actions to classify subsystems in mGBL into a control unit, device unit, and logical unit. The mobile game server state, mobile game client state, and question server state are the design outcomes of the FSM hierarchy. J2ME was used to implement the FSM mGBL states as it enables the development of mobile applications that run on mobile devices integrated with wireless technology. Java ME provides Application Programming Interface (API) game packages to build mobile game applications. The architectural interconnection and FSM mGBL states interact effectively across wireless communication using the HTTP protocol on the server side (Wi-Fi LAN), mobile game side (Wi-Fi PDA), and Bluetooth client-server interface. Questionnaire responses gained from 28 respondents aged 15–17 years old indicated that 80% were satisfied with the learning aspect of the mGBL method. Thus, this method is well accepted by learners and can serve as an alternative learning model because it encompasses planning, execution, knowledge information resources, and evaluation. However, only 60% of respondents were satisfied with the attractiveness and multimedia aspects of mGBL, indicating a need for improvement compared to commercial mobile games available on the market.
