Abstract

Handling uncompressed digital video data requires immense storage capacity. In this research, an uncompressed video frame requires 1 MB of storage space, whereas available storage capacity is limited. To compress video surveillance footage, the method developed in this study employs video surveillance compression based on edge detection with wavelet transform. First, at the encoder side, dominant edges of a frame are detected and encoded as side information. The optimal decoder configuration involves a single-stage decomposition with a quantization value of 64; extending decomposition to a second stage degrades visual reconstruction quality to a PSNR of 25.11 dB. To identify frames suitable for compression, error values representing spatial differences between video frames are calculated. The allowable error threshold for successful compression ranges from 0.03 to 0.04; error values exceeding 0.04 yield very few compressed frames, resulting in a compression factor of merely 1%, which leads to severe information loss. Comparing video surveillance data (13 fps) with standard video (30 fps), visual inspection demonstrates superior reconstruction quality for video surveillance. At an error value of 0.03, the compression factor for video surveillance is 0.17 compared to 0.12 for 30 fps video, with a compression time of 12.18 seconds—shorter than the 22 seconds required for 30 fps video. Evaluating MPEG-1 versus the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) method shows that MPEG-1 offers a better compression time (11.48 seconds) and compression factor (0.29) than DWT (12.16 seconds and 0.17, respectively) at an error value of 0.03. However, from a file capacity standpoint, DWT outperforms MPEG-1, yielding a smaller compressed file size of 10.21 KB compared to 16.93 KB for MPEG-1, while maintaining comparable visual quality with PSNR values ranging from 33 to 38 dB. Performance metrics evaluated via Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) confirm that the proposed edge-detection and DWT-based encoding method is highly suitable for video surveillance compression.
