Abstract

Improving productivity is a major concern for many industries because it is closely related to the effectiveness and efficiency of transforming resources into marketable products and ultimately determining business profitability. Therefore, various indicators and factors that may affect productivity need to be considered to improve overall productivity. This research aims to identify the relationships between occupational safety, occupational health, the physical work environment, and the psychological and social work environment and work productivity. The research was conducted at PT Barata Indonesia (Persero) – Gresik, a large state-owned manufacturing company engaged in metal and heavy equipment manufacturing as well as Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services for large-scale industries. The data were collected through questionnaires distributed to employees in the production division. A total of 126 returned questionnaires were considered valid and suitable for analysis. The data were tabulated using SPSS 11, while statistical analysis was performed using LISREL 8.30 with the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method. The SEM results indicate that occupational safety and occupational health have direct effects on work productivity. Based on confirmation with the manager, occupational safety and health can affect productivity because manufacturing companies involve numerous machines and work equipment that may endanger employees' safety and health if personal protective equipment is not used and safety procedures are not followed. The physical work environment was found to have no significant effect on productivity. This may be attributed to employees' familiarity with the existing working conditions, including the physical, social, and psychological aspects of the work environment, which they have become accustomed to and are therefore able to accept both physically and mentally.
