Abstract

This study extends the Common Replenishment Epoch (CRE) model developed by Viswanathan and Piplani (2001) by considering the feasibility of shipment consolidation. In the CRE model, the vendor consolidates buyers' replenishment orders by establishing a replenishment schedule at specific times and offering incentives in the form of discounts to encourage buyers to follow the replenishment intervals specified by the CRE policy. However, the existing CRE model does not address the operational mechanism for implementing the CRE strategy, particularly the feasibility of shipment consolidation. To address this gap, this study develops a model and heuristic algorithm for implementing the CRE strategy while considering shipment consolidation feasibility. In the proposed model, replenishment orders are placed at multiples of the Power-of-Two (PoT) policy, namely 2^k, where k = 0, 1, 2, ... of the base period. Orders from buyers with the same replenishment interval are consolidated by determining the optimal vehicle types and delivery routes. Discounts are offered selectively, only to buyers whose orders can be consolidated into the same shipment, in order to minimize total costs. Numerical examples are used to evaluate the advantages of the proposed coordination model compared with the multiple-integer policy, in which replenishment can be conducted at any integer multiple of the base period. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to examine the behavior of the proposed model under several scenarios.
