Abstract

Fingerprint identification is a suitable choice for application in security technology due to the distinctiveness and uniqueness of human fingerprints. Many methods are used for fingerprint identification, such as minutiae-based approaches and image matching. In large fingerprint databases, the minutiae method provides fast identification but lacks accuracy because it may output several candidate fingerprints (non-singularity). On the other hand, image matching offers high accuracy by yielding a single identification result (singularity), though it requires significant computational time. By leveraging the strengths of both approaches, the proposed hybrid method combining minutiae and image matching aims to enhance both accuracy and processing speed. The hybrid identification framework presented in this study consists of several steps: searching candidate fingerprints using minutiae extraction, followed by comparing these candidates with the input image using phase correlation-based image matching. To further increase identification speed, both methods are implemented using parallel processing on a computer cluster.
