Abstract

Determining an economical production lot size and order quantity is an important issue in inventory management. This study develops a Joint Economic Lot Size (JELS) model for products sold under a warranty policy, in which the manufacturer's production lot size is an integer multiple of the distributor's order quantity Q and the manufacturer's production process deteriorates over time. Two models are developed for determining the manufacturer's production lot size and the distributor's order quantity under a deteriorating production process, deterministic demand, and a Free-Replacement Warranty (FRW) policy. The performance measure of the proposed models is the minimization of the total pre-sale and post-sale cost per unit, with the production lot size per cycle (Q) as the decision variable. In Model I, the system is modeled with a deteriorating production process. Model II considers a system with a deteriorating production process in which the manufacturer conducts inspection to reduce non-conforming items. The manufacturer applies a 100% inspection policy. Both Model I and Model II do not allow backorders. Numerical experiments show that increases in restoration cost, setup cost, and ordering cost result in larger production lot sizes and distributor order quantities, as well as higher total joint costs. In contrast, increases in minimal repair cost, repair cost, warranty period, and the probability of non-conforming products result in smaller production lot sizes and distributor order quantities but increase the total joint cost. This study demonstrates that an integrated inventory model can achieve lower total inventory costs than an independent model. Furthermore, the model incorporating quality control can achieve lower total inventory costs than the model without quality control.
