Abstract

In transmitting information in the form of speech signals over telephone lines, an encryption/decryption method is required to secure the transmitted data from hackers and crackers. The encryption/decryption methods used in this study are RSA and RC4. The selection of the RSA method is based on its high security level, owing to the computational difficulty of prime factorization, as well as its widespread implementation on Digital Signal Processors (DSP). On the other hand, the RC4 method is selected due to its minimal buffer memory requirements, making it suitable for implementation on DSPs operating at lower clock frequencies. The objective of this research is to design and implement RSA and RC4 encryption/decryption algorithms on a DSP for speech signal scrambling. A real-time system is achieved if the execution time for encrypting/decrypting each sample, or the processing time for transmitting/receiving each sample across two DSP TMS320C5402 units, does not exceed the sampling period of 125 μs. Based on experimental measurements, the execution time required to encrypt/decrypt a single sample using the RSA method is 728 μs, whereas the RC4 method requires 2.4 μs. The execution time for transmitting or receiving each sample between the two DSP TMS320C5402 units is 70 μs. Consequently, the RC4 encryption/decryption method was successfully implemented in real time on two DSP TMS320C5402 units connected via an RS-232 cross cable in full-duplex mode. Furthermore, the designed system operates on a stand-alone basis, rendering the module portable and practical.
