Abstract

Temperature is an essential attribute in cold chain management because it plays a crucial role in consistently maintaining the quality and safety of perishable products before they are received by customers. This study develops a Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW) model to determine the routes and delivery schedules for multi-item, multi-temperature perishable products. This study extends a previous VRPTW model for single-item, single-temperature perishable products. The objective of the proposed model is to minimize distribution costs by considering not only capacity and time-window constraints but also variations in storage temperature within the cold chain. Two integrated trade-offs are considered in the model: travel cost, which is related to distance, and energy cost, which is related to storage temperature. Two different strategies are employed to determine the routes: the dependent distance strategy, which focuses on travel distance (route first, cluster second), and the dependent temperature strategy, which focuses on storage temperature (cluster first, route second). This study also compares the two strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of perishable product delivery strategies. The methods used in this study are Nearest Neighbor (NN) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The routes generated by NN are used as the initial solution for PSO. The numerical results show that energy costs contribute significantly to the total distribution cost, particularly for clustered data. Clustered customer locations result in higher energy costs but lower transportation costs and vehicle usage. Furthermore, the dependent distance and dependent temperature strategies involve two different trade-offs, namely between transportation cost and vehicle usage and between energy cost.
