Abstract

In this thesis, hybrid filter is designed without transformer to reduce the distortion of current harmonics caused by non-linear load in the Industrial Power system. Hybrid filter consists of passive filter and active filter. Both are connected in series and the filter is connected in parallel to power system. Active filter improves the hybrid filter performance although its rating is much smaller compared to the passive filter. In this thesis, the filter control uses the $abc\text{-}dq$ transformation without using PLL. PLL function is replaced by $abc\text{-}\alpha\beta$ transformation. $\alpha\beta$ component is used for calculating the sine and cosine values in $abc\text{-}dq$ transformation. Without PLL, performance of $abc\text{-}dq$ transformation is not affected by voltage source waveform which is not ideal caused by non-linear load. Results of simulation show that the performance of hybrid filter is better compared to the passive filter. At full load, THD of source current can be reduced from 24.7% to 4.8%. This meets the IEEE 519-1992 standard for harmonics requiring THD of source current to be below 5%.
