Abstract

The refractive index is an important factor in the design of optical waveguides. The refractive index of a medium depends on the wavelength of light interacting with the medium. The dependence of the refractive index on wavelength, commonly known as refractive index dispersion, can be empirically described using the Cauchy dispersion model. By applying Maxwell's equations and several approaches involving electrons interacting with electromagnetic (EM) waves, the Sellmeier refractive index dispersion model can be obtained. Numerical tests of the Cauchy and Sellmeier dispersion models were conducted using PMMA-495 and PMMA-950 data. Statistically, the results of both dispersion models showed no significant difference between the model predictions and the experimental data. Based on the graphical results and the residual sum of squares, the four-term Cauchy dispersion model and the four-term Sellmeier dispersion model provided the best fits for PMMA-495. For PMMA-950, the three-term Cauchy dispersion model and the four-term Sellmeier dispersion model provided the best fits. This study also reports the application of the two validated dispersion models to the design of a TE (Transverse Electric) mode step-index planar waveguide using PMMA-495 and PMMA-950. Based on the Cauchy and Sellmeier dispersion models, a film thickness of h = 6.7392 µm is required to guide light with a wavelength of 632.8 nm effectively in PMMA-495, while a relatively similar film thickness of approximately 6.776 µm is required for PMMA-950.
