Abstract

Increased human activity affects hearing problems. Noise can be controlled by creating absorbers that work to absorb sound energy. Composites can be made from synthetic or organic materials. Natural fiber-reinforced composite materials can be used as the basic material for the manufacture of absorbers. This research uses abaca banana fiber, which has been treated with alkalization and hydrolysis, as a filler and epoxy resin as a matrix. The variable in this study is the thickness of the composite, which is adjusted by applying pressure during sample preparation with different variations. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of thickness on the value of the sound absorption coefficient (α). Testing of the sound absorption coefficient (α) was carried out using an impedance tube based on the standing wave ratio principle, with a frequency range of 500 Hz–4000 Hz. The value of the sound absorption coefficient (α) was obtained through the correlation of physical quantities with acoustic values. From the pressure variations of 7.8 KPa, 14.1 KPa, 20.3 KPa, 26.5 KPa, and 32.8 KPa, the sound absorption coefficient values tended to be effective at frequencies of ≥ 2000 Hz, namely 0.84; 0.80; 0.75; 0.72; and 0.78. Based on the experiments that have been carried out, the results show that the smaller the applied pressure, the thicker the composite becomes, causing the porosity of the composite to increase. The airflow resistance tends to decrease, resulting in an increase in the sound absorption coefficient. Differences in the α values were observed due to voids in the composite and the inhomogeneous nature of the fibers. The experimental results are in accordance with the semi-empirical modeling using the Delany-Bazley and Miki models, which show that the smaller the applied pressure, the greater the tendency of the sound absorption coefficient to increase, with effectiveness at frequencies of ≥ 2000 Hz.
