Abstract

Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is one of the plants that can be used to improve soil quality, especially in pollutant degradation. Post-mining land, as a relatively extreme environment, is characterized by physical and chemical soil degradation, making it one of the stress factors for plants, including those growing in post-oil-mining soil in Bojonegoro Regency. This study aims to determine the growth and physiological responses of vetiver to Petroleum Hydrocarbon (PHC) stress under different concentration treatments. This research was conducted through a preliminary test involving the analysis of pH and initial PHC levels in the soil using spectrophotometric methods, as well as plant acclimatization. The treatment was carried out for 45 days with variations in contaminated soil concentrations of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the total soil weight. Growth parameters included root length, crown height, total number of leaves, and wet and dry weights of the crown and roots; physiological parameters included the percentage of water content in the plants and total chlorophyll content measured using spectrophotometric methods. PHC removal efficiency and final soil pH were measured as supporting data after the treatment period. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and a One-Way ANOVA statistical test. The results showed that the initial PHC level was 80,441.02 mg/kg, with soil pH ranging from 4.0–6.4. The application of PHC stress to vetiver plants under different contaminated soil concentrations affected root length, crown height, wet and dry weights of the crown and roots, percentage of water content in the plants, and total chlorophyll content. The highest PHC concentration produced a positive response in terms of the average root length of 21.00 ± 2.00 cm, crown height of 120.00 ± 3.00 cm, root wet weight of 5.99 ± 0.31 g, and root dry weight of 0.90 ± 0.05 g; while producing a negative response in terms of the average crown wet weight of 6.90 ± 0.43 g and crown dry weight of 1.38 ± 0.09 g, with water content decreasing to 65% in the crown and 80% in the roots, and total chlorophyll content of 33.73 ± 5.49 mg/L. The efficiency of PHC removal increased as the concentration of contaminated soil decreased, reaching 33.37% at a PHC-contaminated soil concentration of 25%, with the final soil pH ranging from 4.2–6.6.
