Abstract

The high level of carbon dioxide in biogas causes the calorific value of combustion to decrease to 4,301.64–62,313.47 kcal/m³ from the original combustion value of pure methane, which was 9,559.18 kcal/m³. A biogas purifier using the water scrubber method has been developed to reduce carbon dioxide levels in biogas. However, this method cannot work optimally when the fresh water inside the purifier becomes cloudy, as the water can no longer effectively absorb carbon dioxide gas. Therefore, a carbon dioxide gas concentration monitoring system is needed to provide better monitoring of biogas quality. This monitoring system uses an MG-811 gas sensor installed on the input and output pipes of the biogas purifier. The system uses an Arduino Uno as the microcontroller and a 20×4 I2C LCD as the display. The results of the study showed that the accuracy of the sensor installed on the input pipe was 99.9%, while the sensor installed on the output pipe achieved an accuracy of 99.99%. Monitoring tests on the biogas purifier using the water scrubber method were conducted with variations in water volume of 1.5 liters, 3 liters, 5 liters, 8 liters, and 10 liters. The monitoring test results using these water volume variations showed that the shortest operating time of the biogas purifier was 1.25 hours when using 1.5 liters of water. Meanwhile, the longest operating time was 9 hours when using 10 liters of water. This indicates that the greater the volume of water used, the longer the biogas purifier can operate optimally. The highest percentage reduction in carbon dioxide levels was 60%, achieved when using 10 liters of water.
