Abstract

The welding process of a bent plate needs special attention because it will produce mechanical characteristics that are significantly different in its HAZ. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to analyze the distribution of hardness in the HAZ as a result of welding by SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) on steel plates that have experienced plastically cold-working deformation. The research specimens are Grade A steel with dimensions of 1,000 mm × 200 mm and thicknesses of 6 mm, 8.1 mm, and 11.1 mm.

In the first treatment, a welding groove was made on each specimen thickness, which was then bent with bending radii of 500 mm, 750 mm, 1,000 mm, and 0 mm (without bending), and subsequently welded using SMAW. The next treatment involved cutting the specimens transversely across the welding groove to obtain three replicated specimens for each welding condition. Hardness testing was performed at three thickness levels of each specimen: the surface, middle, and base. At each level, there were 11 examination points, consisting of 3 points in the base metal, 5 points in the HAZ, and 3 points in the weld metal.

The results of the examination show that the bending radius and plate thickness affect the HAZ hardness value. The greater the bending radius, the higher the resulting HAZ hardness. Likewise, increasing plate thickness progressively results in higher HAZ hardness. The lowest HAZ hardness value (136.43 HV) was obtained in the specimen with a 500 mm bending radius and 6 mm thickness, while the highest HAZ hardness value (205.89 HV) was obtained in the specimen with a 0 mm bending radius (without bending) and 11.1 mm thickness (201.76 DPH).
