Abstract

The demand of the shipbuilding industry for stainless steel has been increasing, especially for tanker vessels. One type of stainless steel that is of interest for research and development is duplex stainless steel 2205. Duplex stainless steel 2205 is a type of stainless steel that consists of two phases, ferrite and austenite, with approximately equal percentages.

Although the corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel is better than that of austenitic stainless steel, duplex stainless steel cannot solve all problems related to corrosion resistance. The welding process of duplex stainless steel creates several problems, particularly those related to corrosion resistance. The cooling process of duplex stainless steel that passes through the sensitization temperature range (1200°C–800°C) can cause the formation of the sigma phase. This phase can reduce corrosion resistance.

This research examined 9 specimens with 3 variations of heat input, namely 0.53 kJ/mm, 1.59 kJ/mm, and 2.94 kJ/mm. For each heat input variation, 3 specimens were tested to obtain more accurate data. The specimen size was 50 mm × 10 mm × 12.5 mm, taken transverse to the weld direction. Ferrite number measurements were carried out using a Ferrite Scope MP30. Ferrite content and corrosion rate tests using the three-electrode cell method were also conducted. The corrosive medium used for the corrosion test was 6% ferric chloride (FeCl₃).

The results indicated that for heat inputs of 0.53 kJ/mm, 1.59 kJ/mm, and 2.94 kJ/mm, the corrosion rates were 0.0334 mmpy, 0.0404 mmpy, and 0.0426 mmpy, respectively. According to the test results, higher heat input increased the corrosion rate. Micrographs also showed that higher heat input increased the ferrite content.
