Abstract

The effect of polyethylene glycol concentration on the mechanical properties of polyurethane was studied. The polyurethane was prepared by mixturing cellulose, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 400, and Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI). PEG 400 was added at different concentration, 95% (w/w) and 40% (w/w). Polyurethane then analysized which including its mechanical properties, functional group and surface morphology. Mechanical properties test were determined by tensile strength method. Whereas the analysis of functional group and surface morphology of polyurethanes, were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) method, respectively. The results show that at PEG concentration 40% (w/w), polyurethane has higher break strength and elongation at break than those of PEG concentration 95% (w/w). In FT-IR spectra of polyurethane, there was band at 1700 cm'1 assigned to urethane group. SEM micrograph of polyurethane surface shows that at PEG concentration 40%, the surface is more homogeneous and dense than those of PEG concentration 95%. It is probably due to crosslink reaction in polyurethane molecules.
