Abstract

Polychloroprene-phenolic resin polyblend is made by combining polychloroprene rubber with resin adhesive. Polychloroprene has elastic characteristics but is mechanically less strong, whereas phenolic resin has high mechanical strength but is not elastic. Therefore, by blending these two compounds, a product with both strength and elasticity is expected to be obtained, which can be applied in adhesive manufacturing. In this research, viscosity and mechanical properties were analyzed for type A and M polychloroprene rubber with varying compositions blended with phenolic resin at rubber contents of 60%, 70%, and 80%. The polychloroprene-phenolic resin polyblend with the best mechanical properties was obtained at an A:M rubber composition ratio of 100:0, with a polychloroprene rubber content of 70% and a resin content of 30%. The mechanical strength reached 1015 kN/m², with a viscosity of 8400 cps. The chemical structure of the sample was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the concentrations of functional groups were higher than those in the other samples. The adhesive sample with the best mechanical properties was then conditioned in a salt solution, resulting in a 32.90% increase in mechanical properties. The sample after salt conditioning was also characterized using FTIR. The results showed that many functional groups had disappeared.
