Abstract

The expansion of motorcycle workshops will affect the quantity of hazardous waste. The composition of hazardous waste from workshops contains flammable and corrosive waste categorized as hazardous waste. The purpose of this experiment was to identify how hazardous waste management and evaluation are conducted for formal motorcycle workshops. Data on hazardous waste management from workshop activities were collected by distributing questionnaires. Questionnaires were distributed to 49 workshops in Eastern Surabaya. Measurement of hazardous waste generation and composition was conducted over eight days. Eight workshops in Sukolilo Subdistrict were measured for hazardous waste generation and composition. Distributing questionnaires and measuring the generation and composition of hazardous waste results were used to develop an aggregation pattern. The highest amount of hazardous waste generated among the three groups of workshops was from the medium workshop category (0.47 kg/motorcycle), followed by the quiet category and crowded category (0.39 and 0.33 kg/motorcycle). The composition of hazardous waste consisted of used oil 73.60%, used batteries 14.86%, used spare parts 5.45%, used packaging 3.48%, cloth 2.43%, and others 0.16%. Hazardous waste management in formal motorcycle workshops in Eastern Surabaya did not have permission from the Mayor and had not been conducted in accordance with the regulations.
