Abstract

Continuous wetting and drying processes occurring on the subgrade of the Bojonegoro road section KM 133 cause changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the soil. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of wetting-drying cycles and rainwater infiltration on subgrade soil parameters. Soil shear strength (cohesion) was determined through unconfined compression tests, while negative pore water pressure (matric suction) was measured using Whatman No. 42 filter paper, alongside infiltration tests.
The experimental results indicated that during the wetting process, the degree of saturation increased by 13.15% from an initial condition of 42.04% to 48.04% at the saturated state, and decreased by 35.98% to 6.06% under air-dried conditions. During wetting, the negative pore water pressure decreased by 79.69% from an initial value of 142.352 kPa to 28.904 kPa, while cohesion decreased by 16.24% from an initial value of 0.4895 kg/cm² to 0.410 kg/cm². Throughout the drying process from the initial state to the air-dried condition, the negative pore water pressure increased to 134,280.6 kPa, and cohesion increased to 2.756 kg/cm².
The experiment also demonstrated that rainwater infiltration caused the soil's permeability coefficient to increase from an initial value of 1.44 × 10⁻⁶ m/s to 6.67 × 10⁻⁵ m/s during wetting up to saturation, and dropped to 9.73 × 10⁻¹⁴ m/s upon drying to an air-dried state. Based on the measured soil parameters, a numerical simulation was conducted using the PLAXIS program to determine soil deformation caused by vehicle axle loads. The simulation results showed that pavement utilizing a Cement Base Course (CBC) subbase performed best in accepting loads under wet subgrade conditions, whereas an Aggregate A subbase was optimal under dry subgrade conditions.
