Abstract
Sintesis polivinil asetat berbasis pelarut metanol telah
dilakukan dengan variasi rasio pelarut metanol-air 1:1, 1:2, 1:3,
1:4 dan 2:3. Sintesis tersebut terstabilkan oleh suatu disponil yang
mengandung kombinasi antara surfaktan anionik dan non-ionik,
serta polivinil alkohol yang berperan sebagai agen pengemulsi.
Polimerisasi vinil asetat diinisiasi oleh radikal bebas dari gugus
persulfat. Sintesis PVAc masing-masing variasi rasio pelarut
dikarakterisasi menggunakan FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared),
TMA (Thermomechanical Analysis), Tensile Strength dan uji
viskositas rotasional. Hasil FTIR menunjukkan gugus fungsi yang
tepat sebagai senyawa penyusun polivinil asetat. Hasil TMA
menunjukkan data koefisien muai panas yang rendah pada produk
PVAc dengan rasio pelarut metanol-air 1:4, sehingga
ukuran/dimensi polimer tersebut lebih rapat dan kekuatan ikat
silangnya juga lebih tinggi. Hasil uji Tensile Strength
menunjukkan produk PVAc dengan rasio pelarut metanol-air 1:3
memiliki nilai stress dan modulus elastisitas paling tinggi yaitu
masing-masing sebesar 23,4 MPa dan 17,891 MPa. Hasil uji
viskositas menunjukkan bahwa PVAc dengan rasio pelarut
metanol-air 2:3 memiliki nilai viskositas paling besar yaitu
sebesar 5000 cP. Dengan demikian pelarut metanol dapat
meningkatkan ketahanan, sifat termal dan mekanik pada material
polivinil asetat.

Synthesis of polyvinyl acetate-methanol based has been
carried out with variations of methanol-water ratio of 1:1, 1:2,
1:3, 1:4 dan 2:3. The synthesis is stabilized by a combination
disponil, which containing anionic and non-ionic surfactant,
along with polyvinyl alcohol acts as an emulsifying agent.
Polymerization of vinyl acetate was initiated by free radicals from
the persulfate group. the synthesis of PVAc-methanol based were
characterized by FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared), TMA
(Thermomechanical Analysis), tensile strength and rotational
viscometer test. The results of FTIR showed that the appropriate
functional group as the building compounds of PVAc. The results
of TMA indicate that low coefficient of thermal expansion at
PVAc with methanol-water ratio of 1:4, so the size or dimension
of polymer is closer and higher on the crosslinked strength. The
result of tensile strength test showed that PVAc with methanolwater
ratio of 1:3 has the highest stress and modulus elasticity
which equal to 23,4 MPa and 17,891 MPa. The result of
rotational viscometer test showed that PVAc with methanol-water
ratio of 2:3 has the highest viscocity value that equal to 5000 cP.
Thus methanol can increase the resistance, thermal and
mechanical properties of the polyvinyl acetate.
