Abstract
Coupler adalah penyambung pada gerbong kereta api satu dengan gerbong yang lainnya. Material coupler adalah baja AAR-M201 Grade E yang spesifikasinya sesuai dengan standar AARManual of Standards and Recomended Practices Couplers and Freight Car Draft Components. Penelitian ini membahas perlakuan panas disertaitempering dan hardening. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisa pengaruh lama waktu tahan terhadap struktur mikro dan sifat mekanik pada baja AAR-M201 Grade E. Proses perlakuan panas yang dilakukan adalah hardening pada temperatur 925oC dengan waktu tahan 3 jam, kemudian di tempering pada temperatur 600oC dengan variasi waktu tahan 2 jam, 3 jam dan 4 jam. Pengujian yang dilakukan pada penilitian ini adalah uji tarik untuk mengetahui kekuatan maksimum, keuletan dan ketangguhan baja. Hasil pengujian metalografi pada tempering menghasilkan struktur mikro asikular ferrit, dan hasil sifat mekanik paling optimal didapat dari proses hardening-tempering pada lama waktu tahan 3 jam, menghasilkan nilai kekuatan tarik 870 MPa, kekuatan luluh 782 MPa, elongasi 14%, reduksi area 38%, kekerasan 264 BHN, kekuatan impak sebesar 35 Joule pada temperatur -40°C dan nilai fatigue life 5100 cycle. Nilai yang dihasilkan seluruhnya memenuhi standar AAR, kecuali nilai elongasi yang hampir memenuhi standar AAR.

Coupler is a mechanism for connecting rolling stock in a train. It is made from AAR-M201 Grade E steel, that has suitable spesification with AAR Manual of Standards. This research discusses about heating treatment that is followed by tempering and hardening. The purpose is to analyze the influence of holding time to micro structure and mechanical properties of AAR-M201 Grade E. The heating treatment process is beginning with hardening at temperature 925oC which generates holding time at 3 hours, then it is followed by tempering at 600oC that have vast-range variations of holding time: 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours. The examinations that was done in this research are tensile test, which has aim to know the maximum power, tenacity, and toughness of that steel. The metalography result in tempering phase produced micro structure of acicular ferrit, and the most optimum mechanical characteristics was obtained from hardeing-tempering process at 3 hours resistance time, which can produce tensile strength at 870 MPa, yield strength at 782 MPa, elongation 14%, area reduction 38%, hardness 264 BHN, impact strength 35 Joule in the temperature -40oC, and fatigue life value at 5100 cycle. Therefore, all of the value that was produced, fulfilled the AAR standard.
