Abstract

Driveshaft is the part of four wheel vehicle which used to transfer the power from engine to the wheel. Nowadays, driveshaft still use the steel (4130) material, so the driveshaft has the heavy weight. There was an alternative that can make the driveshaft lighter than before. The alternative is about replacing material. Steel (4130) can be replaced by fiber carbon-epoxy material. To optimize the fiber carbon – epoxy material, we can use the optimal parameter. The parameter is angle orientation of fiber carbon and the total layer of fiber carbon.
First step of this research is making the model design of the steel (4130) driveshaft and the model of fiber carbon-epoxy driveshaft. After that, the models were simulated with the finite element analysis software. Then, the parameters was determined for the best result. The result of the simulation is used to doing the experiment. In the experiment step, there are two sub-step. First, the product is created. The second is the product is tested with the torsional testing.
Simulation process is produced the optimal configuration of fiber carbon – epoxy driveshaft. There are four categories from the configuration. There were total deformation, equivalent stress, equivalent elastic strain, and tsai-hill failure. The total deformation is 1.505 mm. The equivalent stress is 297.51 MPa. The equivalent elastic strain is 0.0027 mm/mm. Tsai hill failure is 0.125 for layer 1, 0.125 for layer 2, 0.125 for layer 3, 0.25 at the end and 0.5 at the middle of layer 4, and 0.625 for layer 5. These categories values is still in the safe zone. So the simulation process is success. The result of simulation is produced the driveshaft product from experiment process. After the torsion testing, the fiber carbon-epoxy driveshaft still have no failure (safe).
