Abstract

Forging in the knife making a metal-forming process using compressive force generated from a hand hammer. This process is carried out in several cycles until a knife wrought. Wrought cycle is the process of heating the blade material in the furnace up to temperature and then performed forging wrought up wrought minimum temperature. The parameters that affect the cycle wrought among others: the heating temperature, chemical composition of material, prolonged heating and forging force. Having forged blade made the process of forming and finishing using gerinding engine, the plating process is then performed (surface hardening).
This research studies about the influence of cyclical forging and hardening the surface of the blade quality of metal materials marks. The materials in the manufacture of blades are forged using scrap steel. Forging process was done manually on traditional blacksmiths. Knife making is done by heating the scrap metal and hammered repeatedly with a hammer. Heated metal reaches a temperature of 723 ° C and then forged. And forging heating cycle performed several times to achieve the desired shape of the blade. Surface hardening process is then performed by heating the blade reaches a temperature of 723 ° C and held for 5 minutes, then rapidly cooled using a cooling medium oil and water. Hardness measurement using a measuring instrument Rockwell C scale (HRC), the measured hardness value side surface and cross section of the blade. Microstructure observation using an optical microscope. The microstructure was observed on the surface, the tip and the blade cross section.
The highest hardness value of material knife axle experiencing surface hardening process in a controlled manner is 51 HRC. The dominant microstructure consists of pearlite and ferrite. Blade hardness of the material for surface hardening swing arm controlled 52 HRC with pearlite microstructure, ferrite, martensite and retained austenite. Violence blade of the leaf spring material for surface hardening process controlled 62 HRC with the microstructure of martensite and retained austenite. Violence blade of the shaft material for surface hardening industrial machinery controlled 42 HRC with the microstructure of martensite and retained austenite. Violence blade of the shaft material batik dye on surface hardening process controlled 51 HRC with a microstructure consisting of martensite and austenite.
