Abstract

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is one of the numeric method used to modeling and analysis. The object of DEM analysis is assumed as a collection of discrete element and the interaction among the elements is determined by the spring constant, inertia and friction coefficient. Modeling Spring constant in normal 〖(k〗_n) and tangential direction (k_s) has been studied using the number of elements in cluster approach and the size of the uniform elements. The approach of uniform element size oftentimes cannot be used to complex geometric forms. Therefore, another approach is needed.
This study aims to analyze spring constant formula numerically in normal 〖(k〗_n) and tangential (k_s) direction with the approach of two elements that have different size (radius). Material modeling is an isotropic material. Geometric modeling is a hexagon. Assume the circle inscribed into a hexagon with r_i is the size of the radius on element i and r_j is size of the radius on element j. Furthermore, determine the interaction of force between elements, then determine the stress components. Compared Stress components from modeling with the constitutive matrix of isotropic material to determine the function k_n and k_s.
The results shown that the displacement values of k_n and k_s simulation and analytical are -0.000556 mm and -0.000585 mm with a ratio value of the error function of k_n and k_s is 4.89486%.
