Abstract

Developing technologies in the field of offshore construction is closely related to the welding process, because it has an important role in the engineering and metal repair. This study is an experiment using speciment of carbon steel A36 in which this material is often used as a material in the construction of offshore platforms. Material welded with SMAW process with a groove angle variation is 400, 600 and 800. Material testing the mechanical properties, such as hardness testing, tensile strength test and micro-structure test. Corrosion testing was conducted using three-electrode cell in artificial sea water with a 3.5%. of salinity. From these results it can be seen that the hardness and strength of the materials goes higher, then it will affect the corrosion rate shrinking. Spesimens with the groove 400 with a highest hardness value is HVN 163, maximum strength is 538 MPa and have an average rate of corrosion at 2:39 mmpy. Spesimens with the groove 600 with a hardness value is HVN 165, maximum strength is 542.3 MPa and have an average corrosion rate at 2.60 mmpy. Specimens with the groove 800 with the value of hardness is 170 HVN and maximum strength 550.7 MPa have an average corrosion rate of 1.60 mmpy.
