Abstract

High accuracy and sensitivity as well as fast reponse are the important required characteristics for a detection system in order to be capable to detect and determine the concentration of harmful elements in materials, that are often found in a very small amount (in the order of ppm to ppb). LIBS is an atomic spectroscopic technique that is used to analyze elements in material targets. Problem of low sensitivity, particularly to detect a very small concentration of trace elements, can be overcame using double-pulse LIBS (DP-LIBS). In this research an orthogonal DP-LIBS measurement configuration was adopted. This system was used to detect and analyze mineral contents of Calcium (Ca) and Iron (Fe) in a local black stone. Using DP-LIBS, the signals of the Calcium element can be increased to be 15 times, 37 time, and 18 time for respective picosecond laser pulse energy of 12 mJ, 20 mJ, dan 30 mJ. While signals for the iron the increase of intensity were 12 time, 34 times, and 6 times.
