Abstract

Fires on the ship will damage important parts such as ship hulls, equipments, and
machinery, even though there is a fire that just happened to the hull partially. Fire-partially
on ships will result in severely damaged in some parts and the other parts that can still be
reused. Ship plate can still be used again if there is no excessive deformation, but must be
confirmed again in terms of corrosion rate changes, because the corrosion rate will affect the
acceleration of the reduction in thickness of the plates. This final project aims to determine
the value of the rate of corrosion on post-burned ship plate. Therefore simulated fire in the
laboratory with the torch burner with variable temperature is 400°C, 600°C, 800°C and
1000°C. The temperature is known by using infrared thermometer. Shortly after the desired
temperature is reached, the plate then immediately sprayed with sea water (quenching) to
represent the fire fighting simulation. Then the plate was tested by the method of threeelectrode
cell in accordance with ASTM standard G5-94. In this experiment plus one plate
again tested with variable with no-heat treatment as a the corrosion rate benchmark of plates
in normal conditions. The results of the corrosion test obtained in a row 400°C, 600°C,
800°C and 1000°C are 0.168 mmpy, 0.317 mmpy, mmpy 0.201 and 0.143 mmpy. While the
value of the corrosion rate of the plate without heat treatment is 0.159 mmpy. The highest rate
of the corrosion occured at a temperature of 600°C, while at temperatures of 800°C and
1000°C have decreased the corrosion rate. This is due both variables were above the lower
critical temperature (A1) that is equal to 727°C so that the microstructure in carbon steel has
changed. This affects to the process of three-electrode cell testing that used electrical current
to determine the corrosion rate.
