Abstract

Radar antennas need a narrow beam and a low Peak Side Lobe Level (PSLL) for which that the solution is an array antenna. However, Using many elements in the array causes excessive energy consumption, cost production, and computational costs. The solution for these problems is by reducing the number of array elements using thinning technique. This study discusses thinning with genetic algorithm using new crossover rule that is Combined Top Five which will be compared with existing crossover rule that is Paired Top Ten. Both methods will be adopted to obtain optimization results (number of elements, PSLL and beamwidth) to be compared with the one without GA (dense array).
The results of thinning optimization with CUP elements indicate that the Paired Top Ten rule produces a PSLL of 0.85 dB lower than the Combined Top Five Rule. However, the Combined Top Five rule is 6.67% superior to Paired Top Ten to minimize the number of elements. Similarly, when the two rules are compared with the dense array (without thinning), better result with 6.2 dB reduction in PSLL value for Paired Top Ten and 5.35 dB for Combined Top Five is obtained. Therefore, this case both rules have their respective advantages in terms of minimization of the number of elements and PSLL.
