Abstract

Metallic coating with thermal arc spray method is a solution to protect materials from the environment, especially in boiler. Erosion occurred on superheater tube that is a component from coal-fired boiler caused by flying ash from coal combustion. The boiler atmosphere condition that operate at high temperature is simulated on this study with thermal cycle method and the purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of thermal cycle on NiCrWCFe coating with thermal arc spray method on it’s micro structure and mechanical properties. Thermal cycle increased the abrasive resistance of coating with the lowest weight loss results is at 10th-cycle with 0,0152 g/cm2 rather than without thermal cycle with 0,531 g/cm2. SEM result showed that thermal cycle decrease the porosity until 2,358% at 10th- cycle. XRD and EDS test showed that the coating formed oxide compound like CrO , FeO, and FeCr2O4. Thermal cycle increased the adhesive strength of coating, proved by pull-off test results at 10th-cycle reached 11,24 MPa. Thermal cycle also increased the micro hardness value that reached 883,7 Hv at 5th-cycle but thermal cycle also decreased the surface roughness until at 10th- cycle with 8,49 µm.
