Abstract

Ancient documents are usually stored in libraries and museums. In the long storage time, the document has a risk to loss the information by physical damage or degradation. The physical damages and degradations are red smear, rotted paper fibers, perforated paper and ink bleed-through. Physical prevention can consume much cost and time. Therefore, non-physical prevention can be done as the solution of it.
Digitalization is one of the non-physical prevention. But, in the digitalization, the noise that appears in the ancient documents are still taken up and interupt the main article on the document. Therefore, the binarization is a process to remove the noise and left only the main article in the image. Ancient document binarization has many methods. One of them is local adaptive threshold where the threshold candidates are taken from the value of their neighborhood pixel. In this research, we proposed new method that focus on the ink bleed-through degradation using local adaptive threshold base on the average and the standard deviation.
From the ground-truth based tests on ancient document with ink bleed-through degradation, the proposed method achieves the first place if compared with Otsu’s, Bernsen’s, Niblack’s, Sauvola’s, Phansalkar’s and Singh’s method. The proposed method achieves the average score of F-Measure and PSNR that are: 91.211% and 17.326 dB with 3.257 DRD and 1,227 MSE. For advanced, the proposed method can contribute the binarization process in the OCR system of Javanese handwritten document for the maintenance and the preservation.
