Abstract

================================================================================================
Marine Current Turbine (MCT) is kinetic energy source that is influenced by the movement of tidal currents. MCT is equipped with a double rotor that can move at locations with high current speed to drive the generator, so MCT can extract electrical energy from the water flow. MCT is particularry suitable at depths of 30 to 40 meters and this is study refers to the size of rotor diameter 16, 18 and 20 meters.
This research methodology is using 3-dimensional hydrodynamic model to determine the optimal location for MCT placement on the South Coastal of Java. The hydrodynamic model in this study is using TIN mesh from coastline and bathimetry data, tidal data, and using rainfall to determine model month selection. To validate the model is using current data from altimetry satellites.
Based on the 3D hydrodynamic model processing and data analysis, there were 124 locations coressponding to the average current velocity of at least 1,5 m/s for MCT development. Estimated energy in March amount 166,900 MWh while in October amount 159,416 MWh.
