Abstract

In this study biodiesel was obtained from in-situ rice bran
in water and subcritical methanol with the addition of CO2 gas.
Factors that affect the biodiesel content of in-situ rice bran in
water and subcritical methanol such as reaction time, heating
temperature, and CO2 addition. In the production process, the
addition of CO2 to give the acid effect to the mixture inside the
reactor. The rice bran oil used in this study contained 11.78% with
free fatty acid (FFA) of 40.42%. Biodiesel is made from a mixture
of rice bran, water, and methanol incorporated into a
hydrothermal reactor equipped with heating, temperature control
and pressure gauge and then pressurized with CO2 gas. After
reaching the desired temperature (200oC), the reaction time is
calculated and stopped after the desired reaction time (3 hours).
Then obtained the product and washed using n-hexane.
Furthermore, n-hexane is separated by a rotary vacuum
evaporator. In the process of making biodiesel from rice bran with
subcritical method is obtained% best FAME 60,278% with%
recovery oil equal to 232,17 ± 12,60%, FFA end indicate that
progressively increase of pressure hence less result that is 3,27%,
and Yield of best biodiesel crude 27.35 ± 1.48%. The best operating
conditions are obtained when the operating pressure is 100 bar.
This study shows that the addition of CO2 also affects the operating
conditions, which with the addition of CO2 can increase the
pressure in the reactor so that the water-methanol condition in the
liquid phase although the reaction occurs at high temperatures.
