Abstract

Plastic nowadays have became inseparable goods in human life, for example ; plastic bottles, plastic bags, helmets, and body kit for motorcycle and car. There are many industries in Indonesia using plastic materials as the main material of its products, one of them is a helmet factory. Raw materials for plastic are expensive and must be imported from overseas, hat reason initiate us to look for environmentally friendly and cheaper renewable materials. One of the bio-composite materials. Sisal fibers can be used as bio-composite reinforced materials that commonly found in Indonesia, thus sisal fibers are used as a mixture of bio-composite materials. Printing biocomposite into finished product can not be separated from injection molding process. Based on that reasons, I conducted a research to find best setting parameter process on bio-composite injection molding without flash defect and short shot. I also try to find effect of biocomposite material composition on tensile and impact strength. The used bio-composite materials are a mixture of sisal fiber, polypropylene (PP) and Maleic Anhydride Polypropylene
iv
(MAPP). There are four composition that will be comparated , the first one is 5% sisal, 5% MAPP, 90% PP, the second one is 10% sisal, 5% MAPP, 85% PP, the third one is 15% sisal, 5% MAPP, 80% PP, and last one 20% sisal, 5% MAPP, 75% PP. The molding injection process of impact and tensile bio-composite material speciments is simulated with Autodesk Moldflow Insight 2016, in order to know the parameters of the injection process that suitable for the Haitian MA 900 / 260e injection machine. The obtained parameter settings from the simulation became the basis for biocomposite material. The biocomposite material is injected into the insert mold to produce the ASTM D63803 standard for tensile test specimen and the ASTM D256-04 standart for impact specimen. The tensile test and the impact test is conducted to know the mechanical properties of each the bio-composite composition . SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) test is performed to know the microscopic structure of each of the bio-composite materials. The results from this research on injection process parameter without flash defect and short shot show increasing composition of sisal fiber will increase tensile strength. On the other hand, the impact strength of bio-composites didn’t exceed the impact strength of pure-polypropylene. From SEM results, biocomposite B has surface fracture with small void and more fiber breakage than any other biocomposites. It can be concluded that bio-composite B has excellent interface. The addition of sisal fibers and MAPP can change the structure of polypropylene with strong adhesion force. The increasing adhesion force will increase the brittleness of bio-composite material.
